Last spring, at the very start of the pandemic, I had to cancel both an east coast tour days away and plans to record my next album down in California.
While I was trying to figure out how we were going to make a new record, separated by hundreds of miles and quarantine orders, I set up some microphones in a little space off of my kitchen. I started recording and filming solo performances of songs, some mine and some covers. I posted them online throughout the year.
I eventually set up a better recording space in the house and we were able to make a new full length album (or two) completely remotely. I’m incredibly proud of all the music we have to share with you now.
First we’re sharing one of the covers I recorded last year, now mixed by our longtime collaborator, the great Pierre De Reeder.
Like a lot of songwriters my favorite Dead album has always been American Beauty. Box of Rain, Sugar Magnolia, Ripple, Brokedown Palace (every track, really) seem to have been fused to my consciousness since I first heard them. But the one that grabbed hold of me the hardest was this one, “Friend of the Devil”.
I hope you enjoy it, and please stay tuned for many more songs to come in the very near future.
